6th Grade General Music
6th graders in this class will be exposed to many different types of music and will learn how to view music in a new and creative way. They will be participating in hands on activities like creating a radio show with sound effects and learning how to read music and play basic songs using our keyboard lab. The students will learn how to express what they are hearing in music using art, creative writing and vocabulary. Students will come away from this class with a new appreciation for music.

Gustav Holst
• Born September 21, 1874 in Cheltenham, England
• His father, Adolph was a pianist neglected his wife, Clara and 2 children
• Clara died when Gustav was 8 years old
• Gustav’s Aunt Nina looked after his family
o In Nina’s youth, she strewn pedals in the path of Lizst
• Gustav was not a happy child due to having asthma
o He hated playing the violin but loved the piano
• Gustav’s father remarried and sent Gustav away to school to become a great pianist
• Gustav attended the Royal College of Music on scholarship
• He developed neuritis and had trouble with his hands
• Gustav failed at his first attempt to compose
• He became the choirmaster & organist at Bourbon on the Water
• He joined the Hammersmith Socialist Club and conducted the choir
o At the Hammersmith Socialist Club he met and fell in love with the youngest soprano, Isobel Harrison
o They married in 1901
• In 1905 Holst was appointed director of music at St. Paul’s Girls School
• Holst tried again to compose, but at the time no one would buy his work
• After WWII he started work on The Planets on long weekends at his family home
• Gustav Holst died May 25, 1934
• He composed 13 operas and several other works, but his most famous to date is The Planets

Gustav’s daughter, Imogen Holst was a distinguished conductor, scholar, teacher and composer
